Ideas

Concept : Navigating the Digital Space

A Website Concept

The Library needs more online presence. The website is a big part of the digital space of the library as it is used by not only people who are at the library but also for people to access from a distance to find books or find out about events.

The current WCL website has a lot of content. Sorting the content in a simple, easy and effective way would allow the user to easily access information. There should be an emphasis on important elements as well such as :

-Library Catalog
A search bar appear on each page

-Library Service
A "Ask a Libarian" option
Promote Libraryelf?

-Social Media
Social media icons visible around content

Some rough wireframes

For visual content many people our age do see visuals first. For a refreshed look, We could possibly incorporate words such as inspire, Learn, engage to generate imagery, text (Header/image text) and colour for the web design.

Moodboard based on adding colour
The idea of adding block colours and imagery to get rid of the feeling that the library is boring.

Project Timeline

Key points for the upcoming weeks

1)      Attend all lectures and attend meeting during the study break
2)      Meet up with client to discuss ideas
3)      Narrow down ideas to one achievable concept
4)      Research/create prototype
5)      Create an appropriate visual style
6)      Document all work on blog

Budget, Journey map and Timeline Screenshots

-Added some icons and colour coded them too
-Not sure how much to put for budget

-Change of page layout

Budget

Written explanation

Printing and Resources
Our team is running on a flexible budget so for the meantime, some funds will be set aside for printing and materials. The cost of materials will depend on what project we decide to push forward. At the moment we are just open to the different possibilities and design aspect of our prototypes.

Funding
At the client meeting it seems that the team at Wellington City Libraries is pretty open to possibilities at the moment. If the project were to progress past prototypes we would need funding from the Wellington City Library by either setting aside funds from the government or maybe donations from the public.

Thought leadership

Written explanation

We are targeting the issues in the physical and digital space of the Library. This is because there are two main spaces that draw people to the library, which are the website or internet access and the actual library space. We are aiming to motivate youth to use the library space regularly by making the most of the resources of the current library or adding to improve the library atmosphere. This will be done by improving the interactivity between youth and the current library services. As a result it will ideally make the library more of a memorable experience for the average library user.
Our approach to this issue is the idea of access. We will create ways for people to access their own world in the library. The visual approach will be vibrant, welcoming, helpful and informative. These ideas will be inspired by space and implemented through the use of pops of colour, imagery and also structured aesthetic of prototype.

Research

Sorry about the delayed post, this is my research about current library competitors that are potentially influencing peoples use of the library.

Two main recent factors:

-kindles and e books (provide a much cheaper, easier and more accessible alternative to what the library offers, also no returns, late fees)

-internet, this competes with people using the library as a research tool (not just for leisure)

Online book shopping also came up as something that might be causing people to use the library less however i dont think this applies to our target age group as we generally arent buying hard copy books due to lack of storage/money.

Lecture notes- Week 5

 Building Community, Enabling Conversation

Summary
The lecture I went to was pretty much about how they redesigned the staff room area to be more open and making it so staff were interacting with more staff often. They pretty much went through their whole process and how they involved the staff (users) into their process.

-The open work environment ended up taking up less space so it became more sustainable as well.
-I liked the idea of the themed spaces where they had rooms that had specific rules or rooms that were specifically for projects etc.
-They had someone who continually built research on how people were behaving in the space.
-They limited colour to make the space more communal as all staff had their own spaces.
-Adding little details like a coat rack so they could recognize who was their just by their coats.
-The idea of box meeting rooms and that people could see through the meeting rooms.

Multi cubical type workspaces

low seating with low flat sceens

Changing the way people read in the library

A selfie station for when people get their library cards
-This was a selfie station next to the place where people get their library cards
-It encouraged people to get library cards and also increased the presence of the library.
